  1. Thoughts from Home

Crime watch community – really?

A sign prominently greets everyone who enters our small 38-home neighborhood – Crime Watch Community. I believe it means we keep an eye out for each other’s property and report anything suspicious. But do we?

It was the Sunday after Thanksgiving. John and I were away all week and arrived home Saturday night. Sunday was a gorgeous 55-degree North Carolina day with fall leaves still on the trees. I couldn’t wait to take a walk around our pretty neighborhood.

Our trash was collected on Thursday as normal even though it was a holiday. On my Sunday walk, three homes still had their empty garbage cans still at end of driveway, not yet pulled back to the house. A sure sign to me (and burglars) that the owners are away. I pulled all the cans down the driveways.

Was I the only one who noticed the garbage cans still on the street? I doubt it. If we are a crime watch community, in the two and half days that had passed, why hadn’t another neighbor moved the garbage cans from the street?

Moral of the story. Posting a sign doesn’t guarantee the message will be carried out. Consider this as you examine the core values and mission of your business. What does your organization do to assure your principles are carried out?

  1. Thoughts from the Office

Talk to yourself

I always make time between Christmas and New Year’s Day to do some office cleaning. Surprisingly, I enjoy it. It’s a walk down memory lane and a reminder of how business has evolved over the past 24 years. Some things I just can’t bring myself to throw away, such as Jeffrey Gitomer Charlotte Business Journal sales articles from 1991. I have kept my notes from seminars where I met and heard inspirational legends Zig Ziglar, Tom Peters, and Tom Hopkins.

Tom Hopkins’ 1987 book How to Master the Art of Selling remains a classic. When I saw him in 1994, he gave seminar participants his “Morning Mental Warm-Up” on a laminated shower hanger. Yes, really! Tom recommended that we recite these thoughts every morning to achieve sales success. I followed that practice for years and I see that they still apply. Here are Tom’s nine thoughts for a positive and powerful start to your day.

  1. I will win. Why? I’ll tell you why – because I have faith, courage, and enthusiasm.
  2. Today, I’ll meet the right people in the right place at the right time for the betterment of all.
  3. I see opportunity in every challenge.
  4. I’m terrific at remembering names.
  5. When I fail, I look at what I did right, not what I did wrong.
  6. I have clearly defined goals.
  7. I never take advice from anyone more messed up than I am.
  8. I never let a negative thought enter my head.
  9. I am a winner, a contributor, an achiever. I believe in me.

A note to my clients

Dear Clients,

I have made a submission for a prestigious designation – Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and need your help, please.

The requirements to be awarded the CSP designation include ten years in the speaking business, 250 verified presentations, a presentation video, and specific income requirements.

During January and February. Sarah Best, sarah@nsaspeaker.org, will be in contact with my clients either by phone or e-mail to verify the presentations I have listed on my submission. If she contacts you, I’d be grateful if you’d respond to her inquiry.

Thank you so much for your help!

  1. Josmo’s Cafe

Since this is couch-sitting, football-watching month, we are featuring a family favorite that I posted many years ago – Hot Crab Spread. Consider making a double recipe since it doesn’t last long! If you’re looking for something more substantial while watching the games, the Chicken Broccoli Braid is terrific.

We hope you will try other Josmo’s Cafe recipes that are listed on the website.
