  1. Thoughts from the Road

Watch what you promise

Have you seen the National car rental “Go Like a Pro” commercial with Patrick Warburton stating that 90% of customers get free upgrades? John and I tested it. It didn’t quite work as easily as he makes it sound!  Here’s what happened.

As an Emerald Club member, we walked down the aisle at the San Diego airport to choose our car. Being vertically challenged, I need to sit in every car that interests us to be sure I can see over the steering wheel and touch the pedals. There are only so many pillows you can pack! The National attendant was available. We couldn’t find a car that worked for me and asked if we could have an upgrade. He said, “Of course!”  We hustled over to the high-end aisle, found a suitable car and drove away.

When we returned the car a week later, we were told by the check-in attendant that we owed another $300.00. Whoa! I went to the service counter inside the rental car facility. I was nicely told by the manager it was because we had upgraded the car. I explained what had transpired when we picked up the car. We also mentioned television ad which touts free upgrades. Without hesitation, the manager honored our original contract price. Go National for providing us fast and friendly customer satisfaction!

Reading the fine print later, John and I learned that upgrades are offered based on several factors including coupons, availability, or higher-level status. Patrick Warburton doesn’t mention that in the television commercial!

Moral of the story. Advertising works. To avoid customer service problems, be certain that your company message is clear about what is provided and how.

A note to my clients

Dear Clients,

I have made a submission for a prestigious designation – Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and need your help, please.

The requirements to be awarded the CSP designation include ten years in the speaking business, 250 verified presentations, a presentation video, and specific income requirements.

During February. Sarah Best, sarah@nsaspeaker.org, will be in contact with my clients either by phone or e-mail to verify the presentations I have listed on my submission. If she contacts you, I’d be grateful if you’d respond to her inquiry.

Thank you so much for your help!

  1. Emily’s Mailbag

Dear Emily,

A lot of whispering goes on in our office hallways by both managers and employees. It’s affecting my morale to think there are secrets being told.

What are your thoughts on whispering in an office?

Best regards,

Bothered by Whispering

Dear Bothered,

Whispering to gossip, exclude, or put down other people is rude and childlike. You are not alone wondering about what is being said and why it requires hushed conversations. Office whispering can lead to higher-stress, health issues, and lowered productivity.

In some offices, managing noise is a real problem. It is possible that quiet voices are being used so as not to disrupt others’ work.

Frequent whispering needs to be addressed by management or human resources. The best way to address the issue is to remind people to move private or confidential conversations to a closed office space.

Best regards,

  1. Josmo’s Cafe

Smokin’ Broccoli is a delicious and easy-to-make winter salad that goes well with grilled chicken. We served it to company and it was a big hit. Enjoy!

We hope you will try other Josmo’s Cafe recipes that are listed on the website.
