1.     Thoughts from home

The gift that shouldn’t keep giving

Did you ever get a gift that sent you reeling? It’s a gift you didn’t want or need. And now it’s a problem.

That’s what happened to my friend Laura. As a birthday gift, her daughter gave her a generous gift certificate to her daughter’s hair salon. “Why would she do that?” Laura shrieked to me. “She knows I’ve gone to the same salon for fifteen years. I’m so loyal that even since my move, I make the one hundred mile round-trip. She’s just trying to tick me off.”

“Well,” I calmly replied, “that’s one way of looking at it.  Maybe there are other reasons she gave you the gift.”  “And what would they be?” Laura wanted to know.  I gave her my thoughts. She likes her hair stylist and thinks you would, too. She thought you may not need to drive one hundred to get your hair done if you had another option.  And she probably doesn’t realize that you’re such close friends with your stylist. “Humpf,” Laura said, “maybe you’re right. Now what am I supposed to do?”

Here are the two choices I suggested to Laura:

  1. Explain to your daughter your loyalty and return it to her to use.
  2. Call your daughter’s stylist to see if there are ways the gift certificate can be used that don’t interfere with the services from your long-time friend.

I don’t know what Laura will decide, but I do know the one decision that’s not in Laura’s best interest - allowing the situation to control her emotions and interfere with the relationship with her daughter.

Is there a situation in your life that seeking options and taking action will allow you to let go?

2.     Thoughts from the road

A contagious act of kindness

It was a typical frantic Friday at the Charlotte airport. The gate area was packed with 200+ people waiting to board my flight to Tampa. Strangers were chatting amicably, hushing only to hear the boarding announcements. All of a sudden, the friendly man I was talking with looked up and said, “I wonder if that soldier is on our flight.” He rushed over to a young, very tall man dressed in Army attire and said, “Are you on the Tampa flight?” After the soldier nodded, the man said, “I’d like you to have my first class seat on the plane.” The soldier look surprised and tears were visible in his eyes.

Those of us within earshot were moved and humbled by what our fellow passenger had done. When he returned to my side he explained that he does this all the time. He feels it’s the least he can do for those who serve our country.

That man has inspired me to find more ways to be spontaneously generous and kind.  I hope this story inspires you as well.

5.     Thoughts from others

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people

and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics

and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty;

To find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by

a healthy child, a garden patch

or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed

easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

                                                             - Ralph Waldo Emerson
