Thoughts from home
Finding Your Passionate Purpose
Tracey is the daughter of a close friend. From birth Tracey has dealt with
physical and emotional challenges. With the love and support of family and her
own determination and perseverance, Tracey graduated from nursing school. Her
parents hoped she was on her way to personal and financial freedom. But right
after she achieved her educational goal, she lost confidence. The idea of a
traditional work environment was daunting. Her mental and physical health
deteriorated.
One day, a friend of her mom’s mentioned that her independent living, aging
mother needed at-home care. Would Tracey be interested? She’d be able to use her
nursing skills in a non-threatening environment. Tracey thought it over and said
yes.
Fast forward three months. Tracey is thriving with an enjoyable and renewed
sense of purpose. The elderly patient is happier and healthier under Tracey’s
watchful care.
Moral to the story: One size doesn’t fit everyone. Search for the opportunity
that fits you. Then you are free
to find purpose and passion that bring health and well being.

Emily’s mailbag
Dear Emily,
I need help with a Chatty Cathy coworker.
She constantly stops by my workstation and interrupts me to talk about
non-work related issues. I don’t
respond, I look away, I keep working – and still she keeps talking. I haven’t
confronted her directly since I don’t want to hurt her feelings. What can I do?
Your advice would be appreciated.
Trying to tune out
Dear Trying,
What an uncomfortable situation for you!
It appears you like this person which makes confronting her difficult.
But you have to deal directly with the situation to get your work done.
Here’s a thought to consider.
Tuning her out when she talks is probably already hurting her feelings. Since
she keeps talking while you’re ignoring her, it sounds like she’s looking for
attention. Try this the next time she stops by. Stand up, look at her and say,
“Cathy, I’m up to my ears in alligators. I would love to hear about your cat
when I can give you my full attention. I’m taking a break at 10:00 and we can
chat in the break room.”
Setting boundaries with coworkers is not being unfriendly or anti-teamwork.
There is a time and place to have non-work related conversations. Sometimes
coworkers need to be reminded.

The Artist’s Way A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity
by Julia Cameron 1992 Revised for
the tenth anniversary in 2002
The Artist’s Way
isn’t just a book to be read, it’s a creativity process that is completed by the
reader. The program consists of twelve segments that guide the reader through
daily and weekly activities including writing morning pages in a journal and
completing personal artist dates. The idea is to eliminate self-limiting beliefs
and other inhibiting forces that stand in the way of personal expression.
You don’t have to be a writer, artist, or musician to benefit.
It’s for anyone looking for inspiration to move forward down any road in
life.
I followed the program in 1997. I credit the principles and discipline I learned
from Julia Cameron for the ease with which I’ve been able to create my books,
audio programs, and presentations.
I’m now in the process of reading the sequel to this book called
Walking through this World.
The focus of this program is not to just observe the world, but to
discover the world. She challenges the reader to look deeper into nature,
relationships, work, and creativity. Morning pages and artist dates are required
again, but she guides a bit differently on this trip.
If you’re looking to gain something different and unique from a reading
experience, The Artist’s Way will
accomplish that.

Health=Wealth
A Fortune magazine February 2008 advertising supplement promoting employee
wellness had some interesting facts. According to data from the Washington,
D.C.-based Partnership for Prevention, workplace health-promotion programs found
that each dollar a company invested in an effective, targeted wellness program
produced a saving of $3.50 in health-care costs. The review also found that
companies with wellness programs experienced a 28% reduction in absenteeism, a
30% reduction in workers’ compensation and disability claims, and a 26% drop in
health-care costs.
What a contrast to a similar study that shows that workplace productivity losses
related to personal family health problems cost U. S. employers $1685 per
employee, per year, or $225.8 billion annually. And that doesn’t include the
health insurance or health-care costs.
More proof that living a healthier lifestyle benefits everyone.
