Thoughts from home
The Secret
A true-life success story
We have a new young postmaster in my tiny town of Terrell. Andrea replaced Mike
who retired after thirty-five years with the postal service. With a population
of only 800, residents get to know the post office staff really well. Joy, our
town’s twenty-three year, permanent part-time postal employee, was introducing
me to Andrea. “Emily travels around the country and motivates people,” Joy tells
Andrea. After some friendly conversation, Andrea says, “Let me tell you about
something that just changed my life.”
Whoa! Now that’s an attention grabber!
Since there wasn’t anyone in line behind me, Andrea went on to tell us
about her life since reading the book The
Secret only two weeks ago.
Some background on the book. Fueled
by Oprah’s endorsement as one of her 2007 book club selections,
The Secret by Rhonda Byrne was at the
top of bestseller lists for much of last year. The premise is simple and
powerful. Our attitudes and thoughts are responsible for what we reap. It’s the
law of attraction. Positive
attracts positive. Negative brings negative. I wrote about another book on this
subject in the May 2006 newsletter, The
Attractor Factor by Dr. Joe Vitale.
Andrea did a great job summarizing the law of attraction for us. She stressed
that the secret is believing and visualizing exactly what you want
as if you already have it. Before
reading The Secret, she had been
hoping for a life change and her thoughts had been focused on what she didn’t
like about her job. After reading
The Secret, she shifted to picturing
herself in a different environment that including working with the public and
learning new skills. Two days later, Mike retired and she was offered the
position as temporary postmaster of Terrell.
Her story gets better.
Andrea had an older car that wouldn’t be reliable for her longer commute. Her
parents are retiring to the Outer Banks which is about a six-hour drive. Two
reasons she needed better transportation. She saw herself in a brand new red
car. Not used, new. And definitely
red. A few days later, her parents
surprised her with a gift. You got it. A brand new beautiful red Nissan Altima
Coupe. “Look out the window,” she directed me enthusiastically. It’s a beauty.
Believing and visualizing that you already possess what you desire worked for
Andrea. Why not give it a try?

Did you know…
Ten Thousand Villages, a retail craft store with more than one hundred locations
throughout the United States, is a Fair Trade Organization. In 1946, Edna Ruth
Byler, a volunteer for Mennonite Central Committee, visited a sewing class in
Puerto Rico. She found a group of talented women hand stitching beautiful
textiles. She was inspired to seek out additional artisans of hand-crafted work
in other countries and help them market their wares in North America.
Each item purchased at their stores helps provide vital, fair income to artisans
and their families. Artisans use the money they earn to improve their homes,
educate themselves and their children, and to put food on the table – allowing
them to live healthier lives of dignity.
Artisan partners are encouraged to use environmentally friendly
processes, sustainable natural resources and recycled materials. Even the
payment schedule supports the artisans and their community. Artisans received up
to 50% when an order is placed and the balance when the products are shipped.
The company works with artisans on an ongoing basis so they can plan for their
future by relying on consistent orders.
Ten Thousand Villages has beautiful merchandise that reveals the love and care
of the artisans for their work. If you haven’t discovered Ten Thousand Villages,
I encourage you to visit a store and learn more.

What you resist, persists
Remember Chinese finger puzzles? These small, colorful woven sheaths test our
patience and problem-solving ability by working just the opposite of what our
instincts tell us. After inserting our fingers, we quickly learn vigorous
pulling continues to tighten the sheath’s grip. To remove its hold, we need to
resist our automatic response. Only with calm and mental focus can we free
ourselves of the Chinese finger puzzle and our frustration.
Can you think of a personal situation where your automatic response worsens the
situation? I can think of several
that do it to me. Losing patience with a crying baby on an airplane. Getting
angry at drivers on cell phones. Working on a technology challenge that I can’t
solve by myself.
Resistance clouds thinking and affects the outcome you desire. When an automatic
response gets in the way of moving through a situation, remember the solution to
the Chinese finger puzzle. Remain calm and don’t automatically respond with a
self-defeating behavior.
